Because of the efforts of the International RP Foundations, the number
of highly qualified scientists working on research into the causes of retinal degeneration has increased dramatically. Information
gained through this research is shared internationally and significant progress has already been made.
Numerous genes causing various forms of retinal degeneration have already
been identified and various other areas of research such as retinal transplantation and growth factors are also being explored.
South Africa is tracking genes responsible for retinal degeneration in local families.
